The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Clyde Walter Carter (AFSN: FR-55794), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as an F-100 Pilot near Huong My, Republic of Vietnam, on 13 March 1967. On that date, Captain Carter was scrambled from the Bien Hoa alert pad to provide night close air support to the Special Forces Camp and friendly village at Huong My under heavy attack by three Viet Cong battalions. Despite heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire Captain Carter made repeated low level passes in darkness within 300 feet of the ground to deliver his ordnance precisely upon the hostile positions. His courageous attacks made in the dark without the aid of flares, broke the Viet Cong attack and saved the beleaguered friendly village. His keen perception of the delicate ground situation and his timely and accurate ordnance deliveries repulsed the Viet Cong attack and saved an untold number of friendly lives. By his gallantry and devotion to duty Captain Carter has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
