The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit to Colonel Lawrence Elmer Bustle, Jr. (AFSN: FR-29960), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as the Assistant Deputy Director for Operational Support and the Deputy Director for Operational Support, Directorate of Operations, Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations, Headquarters United States Air Force, Washington, District of Columbia, from 3 September 1982 to 30 June 1984. During this period, the exemplary ability, diligence, and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Bustle resulted in significant contributions to the enhancement of Air Force combat readiness, sustainability and survivability worldwide. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Bustle culminate a distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders No. G-3643 (1968)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Lawrence Elmer Bustle, Jr. (AFSN: FR-29960), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-4D Aircraft Commander near Xom Lang, North Vietnam on 12 September 1968. On that date, Major Bustle was performing duty as a forward air controller over North Vietnam. Despite intense heavy caliber anti-aircraft artillery fire, Major Bustle found a target for two other fighter-bombers. Although his aircraft was hit and badly damaged, Major Bustle marked the target for the fighters before he left the target area. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Bustle has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders No. G-2365 (1968)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Lawrence Elmer Bustle, Jr. (AFSN: FR-29960), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander in Southeast Asia on 2 April 1968. On that date, Major Bustle was diverted to strike a convoy of trucks stalled along Highway 15. Displaying extreme bravery, outstanding flexibility, and professional skill, Major Bustle delivered all his ordnance precisely on target using extremely hazardous, low level multiple passes in spite of low fuel, ragged terrain, and withering ground fire. His flight was credited with four trucks destroyed, two trucks damaged, six petroleum secondary explosions and fires, one very large petroleum fire which burned for over one hour, and over twenty-five secondary incendiary explosions. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Bustle reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

In this important assignment, the leadership, exemplary foresight, and ceaseless efforts consistently demonstrated by Colonel Bustle resulted in an effective support for North Atlantic Treaty Organization units and Department of Defense units in Southwestern Turkey. The superior initiative, outstanding leadership, and personal endeavor displayed by Colonel Bustle reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
