The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Raymond A. Bruntrager (ASN: 0-822039), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, near Prattsburg, New York, on 21 April 1944. Lieutenant Bruntrager, at the risk of his own life, removed the disabled pilot from a wrecked and burning airplane and with his bare hands smothered and beat out the flames on the body of the pilot, sustaining severe burns during the rescue.
