The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major James Ellis Brunson, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Aircraft Commander of an F-4C Aircraft, on 27 April 1966. On this date, Major Brunson bombed and strafed several hostile artillery and anti-aircraft gun positions. In spite of heavy and accurate defensive flak, Major Brunson made continued aggressive attacks until the targets were destroyed. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Brunson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, Pacific Air Forces, Special Orders GB-0394 (March 28, 1973)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel James Ellis Brunson, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force over hostile territory on 22 December 1972. On that date, as an F-4D Aircraft Commander, Colonel Brunson led a flight of four tactical fighters on a mission to provide air defense protection of a large allied strike force. Disregarding his own personal safety, Colonel Brunson fearlessly maneuvered his flight between a flight of attacking enemy interceptors and the friendly force negating their attack. After insuring the safety of the bomber force, Colonel Brunson aggressively pursued and destroyed one of the enemy interceptors. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Brunson has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
