The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel James Ellis Brunson, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force over hostile territory on 22 December 1972. On that date, as an F-4D Aircraft Commander, Colonel Brunson led a flight of four tactical fighters on a mission to provide air defense protection of a large allied strike force. Disregarding his own personal safety, Colonel Brunson fearlessly maneuvered his flight between a flight of attacking enemy interceptors and the friendly force negating their attack. After insuring the safety of the bomber force, Colonel Brunson aggressively pursued and destroyed one of the enemy interceptors. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Brunson has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
