    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Fred Eugene Graham. Boyle (ASN: 39827642), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Engineer and Top Turret Gunner of a B-17 Bomber in the 364th Bombardment Squadron, 30th Bombardment Group (Heavy), EIGHTH Air Force, on a bombing mission over Schweinfurt, Germany, on 17 August 1943. Prior to reaching the target, Technical Sergeant Boyle was wounded by an exploded cannon shell. Though suffering severe pain, he courageous remained in his turret, fighting off vicious attacks by enemy fighters. When three bombs hung in the bomb-bay due to damage to the release mechanism. Technical Sergeant Boyle skillfully assisted the bombardier in hand releasing them. This accomplished he immediately returned to his guns and continued to fire at the attacking planes. The gallantry, skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Technical Sergeant Boyle on this occasions reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Boyle, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
