The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain Alfred Andrew Boyd, Jr. (AFSN: FR-69912), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as a Forward Air Controller and O-2 Pilot of 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, DaNang Air Base, South Vietnam, in action over Southeast Asia on 12 December 1967. On that date, Captain Boyd came to the aid of a Special Forces team that was in danger of being overrun by a numerically superior hostile force. Because of ground fog in the area and the proximity of the unfriendly forces to the team, he flew at tree-top level guiding the fighter aircraft into the target area and giving them a verbal drop command because they could not see the target. In spite of the intense ground fire in the area, Captain Boyd was able to successfully employ the ordnance provided and broke up the hostile threat to the friendly forces. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Boyd has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

In these critical assignments, the exemplary leadership, extraordinary foresight, in-depth technical knowledge, and ceaseless efforts consistently demonstrated by Colonel Boyd resulted in significant contributions to the enhancement of the Air Force technology program of crucial national importance. Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Order G-1074 (1968)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Captain Alfred Andrew Boyd, Jr. (AFSN: FR-69912), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as a Forward Air Controller and O-2 Pilot of 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, DaNang Air Base, South Vietnam, directing tactical airpower in Southeast Asia on 13 November 1967. On that date, Captain Boyd directed close air support missions at night against unfriendly forces surrounding a Special Forces team deep in hostile territory. He flew low over the target area for three hours in his O-2A aircraft while controlling aircraft under the difficult conditions of darkness, unfavorable terrain, and intense hostile ground fire. Because of his disregard for his own personal safety, the lives of 42 men were saved and valuable reconnaissance information possessed by the team was delivered for use in tactical planning. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Boyd has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

On that date, while directing multiple air strikes against a convoy of trucks, Captain Boyd repeatedly exposed himself to heavy barrages of hostile antiaircraft artillery fire while marking targets for eight flights of strike aircraft. Captain Boyd, with undaunted determination, indomitable courage, and professional skill made repeated marking passes against the hostile position with devastating results. By his gallantry and devotion to duty Captain Boyd has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
