The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Alfred Andrew Boyd, Jr. (AFSN: FR-69912), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as a Forward Air Controller and O-2 Pilot of 20th Tactical Fighter Squadron, DaNang Air Base, South Vietnam, in action over North Vietnam on 5 August 1967. On that date, while directing multiple air strikes against a convoy of trucks, Captain Boyd repeatedly exposed himself to heavy barrages of hostile antiaircraft artillery fire while marking targets for eight flights of strike aircraft. Captain Boyd, with undaunted determination, indomitable courage, and professional skill made repeated marking passes against the hostile position with devastating results. By his gallantry and devotion to duty Captain Boyd has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
