The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Robert Earl Armstrong (ASN: US-51836231), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Armstrong distinguished himself while serving as a Team Leader with Company C, 3d Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 28 January 1969, Specialist Armstrong’s patrol was suddenly engaged by a well-concealed enemy force. Reacting quickly, Specialist Armstrong initiated suppressive fire and moved through the hail of enemy fire to aid a wounded comrade. Moving the men to a better position he called for and accurately adjusted artillery on the enemy position. While keeping in constant communication with his unit, Specialist Armstrong directed the fire of his men and marked the enemy positions for gunships which he directed against them. As a reinforcing element neared his position, Specialist Armstrong guided them to his position as he assisted in the evacuation of his patrol’s wounded. Specialist Four Armstrong’s courageous acts, outstanding leadership, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
