The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Silver Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Sixth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Robert E. Blake, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 11 May 1972. On that date, Major Blake participated in a dangerous and sensitive mission against a very strategic combination highway and railroad bridge connecting a main supply artery deep within hostile territory. Despite surface-to-air missiles and intense anti-aircraft artillery fire over the target, Major Blake was successful in interdicting this important supply route, greatly hampering the hostile forces’ re-supply effort. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Blake reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
