The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Robert Edward Blake, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 1 July 1972. On that date, despite heavy defensive reactions including surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery fire and hostile aircraft in the vicinity, Major Blake, an F-4 combat aircrew member, led a flight of four aircraft against a high-priority target deep in North Vietnam. Maneuvering against defensive threats and hampered by deteriorating weather conditions, he succeeded in rendering unusable one of the largest airfield runways in North Vietnam, thereby significantly reducing the defensive capabilities of hostile forces along the Northeast logistics route structures. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Blake has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
