The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) John R. Bennett (ASN: 0-732132), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving with the EIGHTH Air Force on a strafing mission, 10 September 1944. Returning after having escorted bombers to the target, Captain Bennett led his flight of P-51 fighters in an attack against an enemy airdrome. While another flight went in low, he took his flight above to spot flak installations. Skillfully sizing up the tactical situation, he led his planes in such a vicious attack that, despite terrific ground fire, all gun emplacements were quickly neutralized. He then made devastating sweeps across the field, firing on all aircraft within range. When ordered to withdraw, Captain Bennett had personally destroyed one JU-52 and five machine gun installations. The high degree of success achieved during this action in which the squadron destroyed twenty enemy aircraft is in a large measure attributable to the courage, determination and brilliant leadership of Captain Bennett. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
