The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Freedman C. Beasley (ASN: 0-759556), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while piloting a Flying Fortress of the EIGHTH Air Force on a mission over enemy territory on 8 September 1944. Just after the bomb release, his plane was heavily damaged and Lieutenant Beasley severely wounded by a burst of fire. Although bleeding profusely and suffering intense pain, he fought off unconsciousness and insisted on being placed in the nose section where he could give advice to the co-pilot over the interphone system. Upon reaching the English Channel, he became violently ill and had to be moved. From his position in the nose, he continued to give advice and directions until they arrived at base and a safe landing was accomplished. Lieutenant Beasley’s fortitude, self possession and devotion to duty, served as an inspiring example for the entire crew. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
