John Batjer graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1937. He retired in 1963 as a U.S. Air Force Colonel.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Batjer, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
