The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Ben C. Bailey (AFSN: AF_43019060), United States Air Force, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while participating in the rescue of four survivors of a United States PB4Y2 aircraft which crashed and burned in Argentia Harbor on 21 October 1947. With utter disregard for his safety, he swam to the burning wreckage in icy cold water and successfully rescued one of the survivors. Corporal Bailey’s disregard for personal safety, and his courage, fortitude, initiative and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
