Stephen Andrew served in the Pacific Theater downing one enemy airplane in aerial combat in 1942, before returning to the United States to train in the P-47 Thunderbolt. Deploying then to England, he became an ACE and destroyed another 8 enemy aircraft in aerial combat, plus 6.5 more on the ground while strafing enemy airfields, before being forced down due to engine trouble and taken as a Prisoner of War on July 2, 1944. He left active duty in 1951 as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel.

Headquarters, 5th Air Force, General Orders No. 10 (September 22, 1942)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) Stephen Wallace Andrew (ASN: 0-429340), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in the 7th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group, FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the Darwin Area, Northern Territory, Australia, on 27 April 1942. On that date, Lieutenant Andrew shot down one enemy Zero and parachuted from his own damage plane while 5 miles from shore. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Andrew, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
