The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant James S. Walbridge (AFSN: FR-31861), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of line of 22 July 1958. On that date, Lieutenant Walbridge, with complete disregard for his own safety, swam to the aid of a drowning individual struggling in the heavy surf of the Mediterranean Sea off the Lebanese coast. Without thought for his own preservation, and battling the turbulent waves and strong undertow, he persevered in his humanitarian efforts until he was able to bring the victim to a place of safety on the shore. The exemplary courage, and heroism displayed by Lieutenant Walbridge reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
