The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major James S. Walbridge (AFSN: FR-31861), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron, in action at Hoa Lac, North Vietnam, on 1 May 1967. On that date, Major Walbridge was the mission commander for a force of twenty F-105 Thunderchiefs assigned to strike the heavily defended Hoa Lac Airfield. In a consummate display of professional skill and personal courage, Major Walbridge initiated the attack despite intense anti-aircraft fire, surface-to-air missiles and hostile MiG fighters that were harassing the force. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Walbridge has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
