Hoyt Vandenberg graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1923. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant General in the Army Air Forces during World War II, earning a Silver Star among other awards. Transferring to the new U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947, he served from 1947 to 1948 as the FIRST Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and subsequently from 1948 to 1953 as the SECOND Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He retired in 1953 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
