The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Fred August Treyz (AFSN: FR 42263), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight over North Korea as a Pilot, 344th Bombardment Squadron, Far East Air Forces Bomber Command, on 7 February 1953. As an Aircraft Commander, flying in a task force of eighteen aircraft attacking the important North Korean supply area at Kudongchang-ni, Lieutenant Treyz, due to engine difficulties, was required to feather the number one engine while twenty five miles from the initial point of his bombing run. Despite the hazard of flying without full power, Lieutenant Treyz elected to complete the mission, and released a sufficient number of bombs to enable his aircraft to maintain the proper altitude and airspeed. Lieutenant Treyz then proceeded on the briefed mission, flying over the primary target with only three operating engines. During the entire bomb run, Lieutenant Treyz’s aircraft was subjected to accurate anti-aircraft fire from enemy ground batteries. Disregarding personal safety, Lieutenant Treyz accurately directed his aircraft over the target and released his bombs, inflicting heavy damage on the enemy supply area. The courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Treyz were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflected great credit upon himself, the Far East Air Forces, and the United States Air Force.
