The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Fred August Treyz (AFSN: FR 42263), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Korat Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 21 August 1967. On that date, Colonel Treyz led a thirty-six ship strike force to the Trung Quan Rail Yard, located in North Vietnam. The target was heavily defended by the most sophisticated defenses known to exist. Precise navigation by Colonel Treyz positioned the strike force for an optimum attack. While in the dive bomb attack Colonel Treyz observed rolling stock in the target area. Even though he faced heavy anti-aircraft fire, Colonel Treyz readjusted his attack to inflict maximum damage on the rolling stock. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Treyz has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
