The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Fred August Treyz (AFSN: FR 42263), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Korat Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, in action on an assigned rail yard on 13 August 1967. On that date, Colonel Treyz led a force of twenty F-105 Thunderchiefs on an attack against a vital rail yard in North Vietnam. Despite numerous thunderstorms which made navigation difficult in the highly sensitive buffer zone, Colonel Treyz positioned the force in the only available area and led the attack which destroyed over thirty rail cars, caused several secondary explosions, and made multiple rail cuts. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Treyz reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
