The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major Earl L. Thornton (AFSN: FV-3034442), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 469th Tactical Fighter Wing in action over North Vietnam on 12 August 1967. On that date, Major Thornton was an F-105 strike pilot assigned to attack the vital Hanoi Railroad and Highway bridge. Flying through intense anti-aircraft fire he delivered all of his bombs on target and then heroically circled the immediate area to fly cover for a downed flight member. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Thornton has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
