Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Order G-1851 (October 28, 1967)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Fourth Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fifth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Earl L. Thornton (AFSN: FV-3034442), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Pilot over North Vietnam on 22 May 1967. On that date, Major Thornton was a member of a flight of F-105’s assigned the task of protecting the main strike force of twenty F-105’s. In addition to completing his assigned task, despite extremely heavy defenses, including six surface-to-air missiles and problems such as aircraft malfunctions, Major Thornton and the flight were successful in negating the missile threat to the main strike force and destroyed one missile site. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Thornton reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
