The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Charles Angelo Lombardo (AFSN: FV-723990), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105F Electronic Warfare Officer near Hoa Lac, North Vietnam, on 7 October 1967. On that date, Major Lombardo flew in the surface-to-air missile suppression flight assigned to protect sixteen F-105’s targeted against a helicopter parking area and an important railroad segment. Major Lombardo participated in the neutralization of an anti-aircraft artillery radar control unit and a hostile radar warning site, assisted in thwarting a MiG attack on the friendly forces and provided electronic surveillance over the intense missile concentration around Hanoi while the friendly forces were in the target area. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Lombardo reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
