The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Silver Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Sixth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major James Edwin Light, Jr., United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as an F-105 Pilot with the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 17 December 1967. On that date, Major Light led a flight of four F-105 Thunderchiefs against a vital military airfield, a primary base for North Vietnamese air defense MiG interceptors. Approaching the target area, Major Light encountered hostile defenses including surface-to-air missiles, antiaircraft fire and MiG aircraft, and restrictive haze made target acquisition difficult. Despite formidable defenses and poor visibility, Major Light located the target and led his flight through a highly successful bomb run, cratered the runway and rendered it unusable. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Major Light reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
