The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Jack Warren Hunt (AFSN: FR-45828), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-105 Thunderchief pilot of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron, in action in Southeast Asia on 19 April 1967. On that date, Major Hunt was the leader of a flight of four fighter-bombers whose mission was to attack a large, heavily defended barracks area. As Major Hunt’s flight approached the target, they were attacked by six hostile interceptors. Major Hunt aggressively turned to meet the attacking aircraft and drove them from the area. Major Hunt then established a MIGCAP to protect a strike force of fighter-bombers inbound to the same target. Discovering two additional hostile interceptors positioning to attack the inbound strike force, Major Hunt immediately attacked and drove them from the area. Spotting two other hostile aircraft re-entering the target area, Major Hunt aggressively pursued and shot down one aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Hunt has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Major Hunt led a flight of fighter-bombers scheduled to attack a key transformer and power station in a heavily defended area. Despite aircraft control difficulties, hostile interceptors, surface-to-air missiles, intense and accurate anti-aircraft artillery fire, and the loss of his wingman, Major Hunt successfully struck his assigned target. By his gallantry and selfless devotion to duty Major Hunt reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
