James Hildreth served as an enlisted member of the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948, before entering Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. He was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program there in 1952. He retired in 1981 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
