In high school, Robert Herres earned his Eagle Scout. Subsequently, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1954, and opted for service in the U.S. Air Force. In 1967 he was assigned to the Air Force’s Manned Orbiting Laboratory as an astronaut and chief of the Flight Crew Division. In 1987 he was appointed the FIRST Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and served in that position until 1990. He retired in 1990 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
