The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Byron Starr Fitzgerald, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as Forward Air Controller with the 19th Tactical Air Support Squadron, 13th Tactical Group, THIRTEENTH Air Force, directing fighter aircraft near Loc Ninh, Republic of Vietnam, on 30 October 1967. On that date, Captain Fitzgerald, with complete disregard for his own life, continually exposed himself to intense anti-aircraft and automatic weapons fire while directing support missions against a well armed hostile force. His brave and aggressive actions saved the friendly forces from being overrun and were instrumental in bringing about one of the greatest victories in Vietnam. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Fitzgerald has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
