The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to Major General John N. Ewbank, United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and as Chief of Staff, United States Military Assistance Command Vietnam, from 20 July 1965 to 6 July 1967. In these important assignments, General Ewbank directed, guided, and supervised many aspects of the planning for strategic and operational concepts and contingency plans for the prosecution of the counterinsurgency effort in Southeast Asia. Exhibiting outstanding abilities as a leader, manager, and planner, General Ewbank, through his vast military knowledge and experience in political and military affairs, provided timely and propitious guidance and direction to his subordinates which in turn generated creative and logical thinking necessary in the field of plans and studies. As a direct result of General Ewbank’s efforts and endeavors, concepts and procedures were developed in the special operations area which attrited and harassed the hostile forces, thereby contributing immeasurably to the objectives of the Free World Forces in the Republic of Vietnam. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Ewbank reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
