The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major William Carter Eagle (AFSN: FR-23954), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-105 Pilot of the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Korat Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 19 April 1967. On that date, Major Eagle was force commander of the first strike on the heavily defended Xuan Mai Barracks and Headquarters and personally planned, briefed and led the twenty aircraft force on the attack. With complete disregard for his own personal safety and with calm determination, he successfully delivered his bombs directly on the target despite extremely intense anti-aircraft fire and when his wingman received a direct hit from ground fire, he exposed himself to even more anti-aircraft fire by slowing to escort the disabled aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Eagle has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
