The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain Howard Lee Bodenhamer, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as the Pilot of an F-105 Thunderchief with the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 5 July 1967. On that date, Captain Bodenhamer was leading a flight of fighter-bombers against a vital transportation link that served as a main line of supply. Despite the intense flak that downed several aircraft that afternoon, Captain Bodenhamer was able to deliver his ordnance exactly on target. He turned back to look for the downed pilot and orbited the area vectoring in additional search aircraft and departed only when his fuel was extremely low. After refueling Captain Bodenhamer again returned to the site and searched until darkness came. Upon departing, Captain Bodenhamer had spent over one hour in a hostile area constantly under the threat of hostile aircraft, ground fire, and surface-to-air missiles. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Bodenhamer reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Howard Lee Bodenhamer, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 19 April 1967. On that date, Captain Bodenhamer was the element leader of a flight of F-105 Thunderchiefs which attacked and destroyed a major target in spite of heavy defenses. As Captain Bodenhamer egressed from the target area, he engaged hostile interceptors and disrupted their attack on a subsequent strike force. He proceeded to post strike refueling and returned to the target area and again engaged the hostile aircraft. He battled the hostile aircraft until he was extremely low on fuel and successfully defended a rescue aircraft operating in the area. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Bodenhamer has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
