The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Major James Henry Ahmann (AFSN: 0-25949A), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an Instructor Pilot and Advisor to the Vietnamese Air Force over the Republic of South Vietnam from 9 September 1963 to 10 September 1963. On these dates, while on a very important mission, Captain Ahmann accomplished a night flight without benefit of flare ship and under constant danger of being struck by hostile fire. This mission saved the personnel, aircraft and facilities at Soc Trang Airfield from injury or destruction by the Viet Cong Guerrillas. The outstanding heroism, professional airmanship and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Ahmann reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Colonel James Henry Ahmann (AFSN: 0-25949A), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as an F-4E Aircraft Commander of the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, in Southeast Asia, on 17 April 1970. On that date, Colonel Ahmann silenced a hostile defensive position and successfully interdicted a vital supply point. During the mission he provided indispensable protection to his wingman in accomplishing the flight objectives in the presence of heavy and accurate antiaircraft fire. His achievements significantly weakened the opposition’s combat capability. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Ahmann reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
