On these dates, while on a very important mission, Captain Ahmann accomplished a night flight without benefit of flare ship and under constant danger of being struck by hostile fire. This mission saved the personnel, aircraft and facilities at Soc Trang Airfield from injury or destruction by the Viet Cong Guerrillas. The outstanding heroism, professional airmanship and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Ahmann reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

During the mission he provided indispensable protection to his wingman in accomplishing the flight objectives in the presence of heavy and accurate antiaircraft fire. His achievements significantly weakened the opposition’s combat capability. In spite of intense ground fire and restricted visibility he repeatedly attacked the hostile location, destroying the entire stockpile and severely weakened the offensive posture of the opposing forces. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Ahmann reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
