The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Franklin R. Albiston (ASN: 39905608), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Aerial Engineer of the Air Crew of a B-24 Bomber in the 450th Bombardment Group, FIFTEENTH Air Force. On 24 June 1944, he and his crew participate in a bombing mission against vitally important enemy air installations in Rumania. Approaching the target their formation was attacked by approximately 50 highly aggressive enemy fighters, and, in the ensuing engagement, their aircraft was severely damaged, control surfaces partially destroyed, hydraulics, oxygen, and communications system rendered inoperative, and the waist gunner was seriously wounded. Despite the crippled condition of their aircraft, displaying outstanding courage and teamwork, they battled against overwhelming odds, bringing their ship through for a highly successful bombing run, inflicting grave damage to vital enemy installations. Turning from the target, under continued heavy enemy opposition, they were forced to drop their protective formation and proceeded through enemy territory alone. In spite of a fire which broke out in the waist and almost unworthy condition of their aircraft, they successfully brought their aircraft through for a safe landing without further damage. By their conspicuous gallantry, professional skill, and intense devotion to duty , as evidenced throughout their combat careers, these men have reflected great credit upon themselves and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
