The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Charles L. Thomas, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Powder River, Dakota Territory, on 17 September 1865. Sergeant Thomas carried a message through a country infested with hostile Indians and saved the life of a comrade en route.
