Calvin Scovel entered the Marine Corps in 1971 as a member of the Platoon Leaders Class (Ground). He graduated in 1973 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a Morehead Scholar and entered active duty in the Marine Corps in 1977 after receiving his Juris Doctor degree from Duke University School of Law. He retired as a Marine Corps Brigadier General in 2006.
