Constantin Sangalis enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1946 after graduating from high school and completed his initial tour of duty in April 1948 as a member of the All Navy Olympic Wrestling Team at the United States Naval Academy. Upon graduation from Ohio State University in 1952, he was recalled to active duty and commissioned a Marine Corps Second Lieutenant. He retired in 1987 as a United States Marine Corps Major General.
