Thurman Owens enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1943 while attending South Western Louisiana Institute, and was commissioned in 1945. Released from active duty in 1947, he completed his studies and received his B.S. degree in 1950 from the University of Cincinnati. He returned to active duty in 1953, serving throughout the Vietnam War, and retired in 1977 as a United States Marine Corps Brigadier General.
