William Nyland was commissioned in the Marine Corps under the NROTC program at the University of New Mexico upon his graduation in 1968. He retired as a United States Marine Corps General after serving from September 10, 2002 to September 7, 2005 as the 29th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps.
