Frederick Lopez enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 after graduating from California State Polytechnic College at San Luis Obispo, California, and was commissioned the following year. He retired in 1998 as a U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General.

His singularly distinctive accomplishments and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
