Manning Jannell graduated from high school in 1940 and attended Valley Forge Military Academy, Junior College. He joined the Navy Reserve in 1942 and the following year, upon graduation, enlisted in the Marine Corps. He retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General.
