Henry Hise attended the University of Texas in Austin before enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserves in 1942. During World War II he landed on Guadalcanal in the first flight of Marine aircraft to arrive at Henderson Field, and five days later earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General.
