Charles Heywood was appointed second lieutenant in the Marine Corps from New York in 1958. During the civil war he received the brevet rank of major for his heroic conduct. In 1891 he was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Marine Corps. By special acts of Congress he was promoted to brigadier general in 1899 and to Major General in 1902. He was the first Marine to hold two-star rank.
