Charles Hagan attended the University of North Carolina as a pre-law student from 1931 to 1933, and earned the degree of Bachelor of Laws from the University of Virginia in 1936. He enlisted in the Volunteer Marine Corps Reserve (Platoon Leader’s Class) in May 1935, and was appointed a second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserves in 1935. He retired in 1973 as a U.S. Marine Corps Major General.
