John Goodman entered military service in the U.S. Army in 1967 after graduating from Arizona State University. He transferred to the inactive Army Reserve in 1969 after serving in Vietnam, and played professional football for the New Orleans Saints prior to entering the Marine Corps in 1971. He retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General.
