The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in addition to a previously awarded Silver Star in lieu of a Seventh Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Perry Lindsay Shuman (MCSN: 0-7991), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Fighting Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VMF-121), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area, from 8 to 16 June 1943. Completing his one hundredth mission during this period, Captain Shuman escorted bombers to enemy installations in the area and carried out combat air patrols in the face of strong enemy opposition, thereby contributing materially to the success of his squadron. His skilled airmanship, courage and devotion to duty throughout these hazardous missions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
