The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Third Gold Star in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Perry Lindsay Shuman (MCSN: 0-7991), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane and a Flight Leader in Marine Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VMF-121), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area, on 30 June 1943. While leading his flight of eight fighters over New Georgia, Captain Shuman intercepted a formation of hostile fighters and, in the ensuing actions, succeeded in effecting the destruction of three enemy aircraft and the dispersal of the entire Japanese formation, thereby frustrating the enemy attempts to harass or damage our ground forces during their initial landing on the Island of Rendova. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in addition to a previously awarded Silver Star in lieu of an Eighth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Perry Lindsay Shuman (MCSN: 0-7991), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Fighting Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VMF-121), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area, from 10 to 13 July 1943. Completing his one hundredth twentieth mission during this period, Captain Shuman escorted friendly bombers to Vella Lavella and, despite strong enemy opposition provided air cover over landing forces at Rendova and over an exhausted Task Force returning from Vela Gulf, thereby contributing materially to the success of his squadron. His skilled airmanship, courage and devotion to duty throughout these hazardous missions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Fourth Gold Star in lieu of a Fifth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Perry Lindsay Shuman (MCSN: 0-7991), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane and a Flight Leader in Marine Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VMF-121), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of New Georgia on 2 July 1943. Undaunted by superior numbers of Japanese aircraft, Captain Shuman led his flight in an aggressive attack and, by his skill and daring maneuvers, successfully shot down two enemy fighters in flames. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Major Perry Lindsay Shuman (MCSN: 0-7991), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of Marine Service Squadron TWELVE and subsequently Marine Air Base Squadron TWELVE, in connection with operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea from 28 July to 31 December 1951. Charged with the responsibility of maintaining the base facilities of two airfields, together with the repair and service functions in support of three to five tactical squadrons, Major Shuman discharged his duties with marked initiative, resourcefulness and sound judgment despite personnel and equipment shortages. Directly responsible for the construction of facilities for staging operations at Kangnung Airfield, he was instrumental in solving the most complex logistic problems to sustain the tactical effort and in expanding the base to maintain the entire Group. By his expert leadership, keen understanding and tireless devotion to duty throughout this period, Major Shuman served to inspire all who observed him and contributed materially to the success of his Group, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Completing his eightieth mission during this period, First Lieutenant Shuman escorted bombers to enemy installations on Munda and carried out combat air patrols over Guadalcanal in the face of strong enemy opposition, thereby contributing materially to the success of his squadron. His skilled airmanship, courage and devotion to duty throughout these hazardous missions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
