Louis Robertshaw graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1936. What there, he captained the 1935 football team and received the Naval Academy Sword for personal excellence in athletics. He retired as a United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General in 1971.

Major Robertshaw made an air attack on a group of Japanese transports in which he scored a direct hit on one transport and several damaged land installations in the Solomon Islands area.
